Our Mission: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity Fiji brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Organisation Capacity

HFHF was founded as a non-profit Charitable Trust in Fiji in 1991 and has been repairing and building homes for lower income families ever since. Since 2009 HFHF has assisted over 200 families in disaster response. Its DR programme has grown from strength to strength, providing new homes, repaired damaged homes and community water systems and most recently, emergency repairs to cyclone-damaged homes in informal settlements.

Since the establishment of its Water and Sanitation component in 2010 HFH Fiji has assisted over 14 communities or over 3,000 people in Fiji to construct or improve their community water-san systems with funding secured from different partners such as New Zealand High Commission, Japanese Embassy, Australian High Commission, United States of America Embassy, University of the South Pacific and the European Union.

HFHF continuously strives to match technologies, materials and methods of construction with the needs of the most vulnerable in practicality, cost and social acceptability.

HFHF is a member of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), a non-profit organisation founded in 1976 to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness. Worldwide, HFHI has helped over 2 million people to realise decent living conditions.

Hand Up Methodology

HFHF assists communities to improve their living conditions by offering them a “hand-up” instead of a “hand-out”. This methodology includes the following components: Volunteer Labour: HFHF lowers the building costs of the assistance it provides to communities by utilizing their volunteer labour, working under the direction of qualified HFHF carpenters and plumbers. Community contribution: To improve local ownership of projects and therefore make them more sustainable, the communities that HFHF assists make provide their own volunteer labour.

Family Selection Process

During the selection of eligible families assisted by HFHF for Transitional Shelter, special consideration is always given to ensure that HFHF’s assistance will promote the gender equality of the end beneficiaries. To help ensure this outcome, the HFHF Family Selection Committee (FSC), which is responsible for selecting end beneficiaries for the project, consists of a gender-balanced membership, from diverse cultural, ethnic, religious backgrounds and skills. The family selection committee exists to ensure a neutral and non-biased selection process for beneficiaries is in place.
