In 2012, HFH Fiji signed a partnership with the European Union to be part of its Sugar Sector Micro Projects aimed at families and communities adversly affected by the restructure in the sugar industry. Most recipients are sugar cane farmers or cane cutters that continue to work in the industry or have been forced to look for work in other sectors.
Due to hardships caused by the downturn which coincided with the global financial crisis, many families lost their farms, their employment and the ability to send their children to school.
This 3 year project, aims to complete the following 4 interventions on the two main islands in Fiji by December 2014.
-
new homes
-
renovations
-
hurricane proofing retrofits of existing homes
-
community water systems
